Plywood During the War

Leg Splint in Wrapping

Charles Eames, Ray Eames

1944

Ray and Charles conducted their business from their small Los Angeles apartment as Plyformed Wood Company. When the US Navy contracted them to create leg splints using their plywood molding techniques in November 1942, they hired a staff and formed a partnership with Evans Products Company. They transformed their business into the Molded Plywood Division of the Evans Products Company and produced over 150,000 splints during World War II. The splint seen here is still in its original wrapping.
