RKR-1

Charles Eames, Ray Eames

1954

This early rocking chair with Wire Shell is upholstered with one of the first textiles developed by Herman Miller’s then-new director of textiles, Alexander Girard. Ray and Charles were friends with Susan and Alexander Girard and they enthusiastically recommended him to Herman Miller. Girard would go on to influence the look of Eames furniture through textiles for years to come. RKR-1 stands for Rocking K-wire (chair) Rod (base) 1 (1-piece upholstered pad).

A paper manufacturer’s label “Herman Miller Furniture Company Zeeland, Michigan” is on the underside of the shell.
