Unique Silver LTR (Strut Table)

This unique silver-coated table was made at the Eames Office and is a variation on the Low Table Rod, or LTR, production model that was introduced in 1950. The LTRs were occasional tables designed to be used as side tables, children’s play tables, or even stools. They used the same materials and production methods developed for earlier Eames table designs: plywood tops finished with either wood veneer or plastic laminate and metal rod bases attached to slender cross braces for stability. Despite these resemblances, the LTRs were promoted as part of a new wave of Eames furniture that included their molded plastic chairs—in a 1950 Herman Miller catalog the LTR was described as “an ideal companion to the plastic chair.” This example is distinguished from the production model by its silver-coated surface. The Eameses may have been experimenting with options for commercial production, or it is possible that this table was envisioned as something that could be employed for a special use, such as an exhibition installation or unique gift.
