“La Fonda Restaurant Table” Prototype

This table features a unique construction based on the La Fonda family of designs the Eameses devised in 1960 for the Alexander Girard-designed restaurant La Fonda Del Sol. The La Fonda base is characterized by its dual cast aluminum members that come together to form four symmetrical columns, This unique example explores the idea of pushing those columns apart—and represents a link between the La Fonda bases and the later Eames Segmented table bases that would realize this idea with a more fully thought through system of elements and connections. While Girard’s restaurant design utilized the Eameses’ La Fonda arm and side shell chairs, La Fonda tables were not a part of the original collection, and were later offered only at a lower height than this example. This table was utilized at the Eames Office at 901 Washington and features a simple board top that has been covered and recovered in a printed paper from Japan.
