ET202 Universal Base Table

Manufactured in 1974, this rolling table finished in red oak veneer, was originally purchased for use in a corporate executive’s home office in Connecticut, where it was accompanied by several other pieces of Herman Miller furniture, including a customized example of Action Office 2—the modular office system designed by Robert Propst that served as a forerunner of the office cubicle. During this period, Herman Miller’s business had shifted almost exclusively to the contract market. Eames tables of the period reflected this shift, from designs that could be employed in large-scale conference rooms, to small tables like this one that could be employed for less formal meetings or house specialized equipment. The addition of wheels and casters to many of the smaller Eames tables aligned with Propst’s philosophy of a more easily reconfigurable and adaptable workplace.
