Before They Were the Eameses
Untitled
Ray Kaiser
1938
This is an abstract painting from April 1938 when Ray studied at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in New York City. Ray was painting in the Hofmann School at 52 West 9th Street, located on the top floor of a brownstone lit by skylights and reached by an open stairwell. This large still life represents a very early, very brief, and possibly influential foray into expressionism.
