Large Leg Splint Sculpture
Ray Eames
1943
Ray and Charles used the three-dimensional form of the leg splint to bring her two-dimensional sketch to life. The striking black form shares a visual language with the Eameses’ logo design for their company at this time, the Molded Plywood Division of the Evans Products Company. This piece, cut with a scroll saw and then stained black, is one of only three known splint sculptures. The design suggests it was meant to be suspended, like a mobile.
