Indoor-Outdoor Group Brochure

1958

With this brochure, Herman Miller announced the launch of what at the time was called the “Indoor-Outdoor Group.” The cover features a crisp image of the collection’s armless lounge chair (#681). It is shown in three-quarter view from behind and lit at an angle from below. This highlights the design’s shining aluminum frame, especially the so-called “antler” spreader that is placed halfway up the chair’s back and serves as both structural support and a useful handle. Floating above the chair, a charming illustration of two birds and a cage conveys the furniture’s dual function. Its “indoor” use is represented by a bird perched within the cage, which is rendered with delicate dotted lines against a bright yellow form. The “outdoor” bird, in contrast, appears to have just flown from the cage’s open door and to be heading off the page. Seemingly, it was heading towards the brochure’s back cover, where it appears again alongside a photograph of the furniture installed on a backyard patio, surrounded by flowers and foliage. Inside, details of the ten pieces that make up the collection— five different chair models, an ottoman, and four tables— are detailed and depicted in photographs and illustrations.
