Goldfish Kite

n.d.

A handwritten inscription along the edge of this kite’s tail notes its country of origin, China. This kite, which transforms paper, ink, string, and bamboo into a whimsical oversized fish, is one of the many kites that hung on the walls of the Eameses’ home and studio over the years, and which also appeared in their Herman Miller showroom stagings, promotional photographs, and advertising. This one can be seen, for instance, hanging on the wall in an advertisement for the Sofa Compact, where its intricate shape and textured surface contrast with the sofa’s sleek lines.
