DSS-1

Charles Eames, Ray Eames

1955

Naugahyde, a brand of synthetic leather, was commonly used to upholster the Side Chairs. This DSS-1 became very popular for schools and auditoriums because they could be stacked for storage and the interlocking side brackets used to create long, orderly rows of chairs. DSS stands for Dining (height) Side (chair) Stacking (base) 1 (upholstered).

A backward “Z” and “B”, a metal circle Herman Miller medallion “DESIGNED BY CHARLES EAMES, HERMAN MILLER ZEELAND MICH”, an embossed Herman Miller logo, and a paper manufacturer’s patent label are on the underside of the shell.
